Dublin

Dublin

Dublin makes an excellent destination for English literature students wanting to explore the literary world.

Europe for Schools helps you bring the subject to life with visits to the birth places of James Joyce and George Bernard Shaw.  Being able to read their books may be one part of the curriculum but actually seeing their regular haunts adds another dimension.

  • The Shaw Birthplace - 'Author of Many Plays' is the simple accolade to George Bernard Shaw on the plaque outside his birthplace. It was in this house, opened to the public in 1993, that Shaw began to gather the store of characters who would later populate his books. From the drawing room where Mrs. Shaw held many musical evenings, to the front parlor and children's bedrooms, this charming residence is a wonderful insight into the everyday life of Victorian Dublin.
  • Dublin Writers Museum - The Irish literary tradition is one of the most illustrious in the world, famous for four Nobel Prize winners and for many other writers of international renown.

In 1991, the Dublin Writers Museum was opened to house a history and celebration of literary Dublin.

Situated in a magnificent 18th century mansion in the north city centre, the collection features the lives and works of Dublin's literary celebrities over the past three hundred years.

Swift and Sheridan, Shaw and Wilde, Yeats, Joyce and Beckett are among those presented through their books, letters, portraits and personal items.

The museum holds exhibitions, lunchtime theatre and readings and has a special room devoted to children's literature. The Dublin Writers Museum is an essential visit for anyone who wants to discover, explore or simply enjoy Dublin's immense literary heritage.James Joyce Centre
  • The James Joyce Centre is dedicated to promoting an understanding of the life and works of James Joyce. The Joyce Centre is the new home to highlights from the Library’s 2004-2006 landmark James Joyce & Ulysses exhibition. Through interactive installations and three films, you may delve into the novel, its historical backdrop, its publishing controversies and learn more about Joyce's life. The Centre also hosts International Joyce, an exhibition providing a wonderful introduction to the life and works of James Joyce as well as his legacy.
